Maundy Thursday – An Act of Humility and Service

Today is what is known as Maundy Thursday. I have always understood that maundy means to wash. But when I looked further into this, I learned for the first time in my long life that it doesn’t. It’s just how we see it. How we’ve come to associate it with an action.

Maundy comes from the Latin word mandatum which means command or mandate. It comes from the night Jesus told His disciples, in John 13:34 (ESV) A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another just as I have love you, you also are to love one another. His act of humility, service, and love was in washing their feet.

The command is to love one another and the example of the kind of love He speaks about is His washing their feet. I urge you to go to the gospel of John and read the entire passage—John 13.

I’m keeping this short this week. This isn’t a time for distractions by yet another blog post. It is time for reflection.

As we remember the price our Lord and Savior paid to atone for the sins of the world, that includes yours and mine, ponder how humble your heart may or may not be. Could you wash the feet of others? What an act of humility and service. The King of Kings, Lord of Lords, Prince of Peace, Mighty God washed the feet of his disciples—and yes, this included Judas Iscariot, the one who would betray Him.

What a Mighty God we serve.

I pray all of you have a glorious Resurrection Day. What a promise He gave to us in His resurrection . . . all eternity with Him.

He is Risen!

Blessings, y’all!

Do you know where you will spend eternity? There are only two choices. Make sure you know you are headed to a life with Jesus Christ who gave His life for you. He is the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Him. Read the Gospel of John. Then read Romans. I’m praying for you.

This is another anthem we sang in our Birmingham, AL church many years ago. It has always been a favorite. So simple, yet profound. I pray it blesses you.
