Feeling Unseen? El Roi – The God Who Sees
We’ve all known people who say they feel unseen. I have a few people like this in my life, people I love dearly. Perhaps you’ve felt this way at times.
While we may feel unseen by our co-workers, friends, or sometimes, even our spouse, God tells us He sees us. Psalm 34:15 (ESV) says, The eyes of the LORD are toward the righteous and his ears toward their cry. From the first book of the Bible, we read that God sees us. The Hebrew El Roi translates to The God Who Sees. This is the name Hagar gives to God when she is in distress in the wilderness (Genesis 16:13).
A PERSONAL ENCOUNTER
This wasn’t just a casual encounter with God. This was personal. God saw her plight, her suffering. If God saw Hagar, surely, He sees us too. Our pain is never hidden from God. He is omniscient, all-knowing. While that may be intimidating at times, in times of need or heartache, any kind of trouble, God knows all about it. In fact, He was there before you knew this was going to happen. Psalm 147:3 (ESV) says, He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. Psalm 56:8 (ESV) tells us, You have kept count of my tossings; put my tears in your bottle.
Think about that. Every tear that falls from your eyes is being kept in a bottle by God Himself. If that doesn’t convince you that He sees you, I don’t know what will. Dwell on that thought for a minute. Go back to your darkest moments. Those times when you felt so alone. God was there. He kept, and still keeps, every tear you shed.

One of my favorite verses is Luke 12:6-7 (ESV). Jesus is speaking here, the words in our Bibles are in red. Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God. Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows. It never fails to astound me that God knows the number of hairs on our heads.
Friends, since God has His eye on those sparrows, He sees you. He knows how many hairs are on your head. Your head. You are valued. You—because God created you in His image. Peter reminds us in 1 Peter 5:7 (ESV) casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.
The next time you feel unseen, go to these verses and see just how much God cares for you. His eye is always on you. He sees you.
Blessings, y’all!
Oh, how I love this hymn. I pray this blesses you! HE WATCHES YOU!!! HE SEES YOU!!!

The Conversation
Iam a widow and feel lonely at times Iam not alone because of Jesus but sometimes when being attacked I would like to have someone to cry with , hold and pray with but the Lord has chosen not to let that happen , the Lord is my only help cause others let you down , it’s still so hard
Marilyn, I’m so glad you found me here. I pray my words help someone each week when I post my meager offerings. I’m no Bible scholar, just an ordinary wife, mom, and grandmother who was given the gift of a “second voice” in my older years. I am 76 years old. My first novel was published the year I turned 70. He does see you. He even saves your tears in a bottle! Don’t ever forget that He is never farther away than a breath. Call upon His name. He hears you! I’m praying for you!
