When Satan Attacks – 9 Scriptures Against Spiritual Warfare

By Debra DuPree Williams @DDuPreeWilliams

Satan entered our home this week. Just as surely as if we’d sent him an engraved invitation and prepared to entertain him using our fine china, he strutted right in and made himself at home. We immediately counterattacked with 9 scriptures against spiritual warfare.

Believe me when I tell you he was not a welcome guest.

It took us by surprise. We were not prepared for his entrance.

But … we should have been. Christ-followers should be the most prepared. We have all the weapons at hand. We know we have authority over evil, demonic spirits just by speaking against them in the name of Jesus. But, we don’t expect this to happen to us.

Why not?

One thing I’ve been told all my life is that when we become strengthened in our faith and are drawing closer to Christ, that is when Satan is going to try to jump right into our lives. We firmly believe that’s what we encountered this week.  Spiritual warfare led by none other than Satan, himself.

GROWING STRONGER SPIRITUALLY

For months, we’ve been doing a chronological reading of our Bible, studying the meaning of what we’ve read. We’ve prayed over our children and our grandchildren many times every day. We were becoming closer as a couple. How was that even possible after forty-seven years of marriage? But God brought us closer through His word.

Then Satan walked in. Uninvited. Unwelcomed. Totally unexpected.

But . . . we should have been prepared.

We were not.

SPIRITUAL WARFARE – PUT ON THE ARMOR

I Peter 5:8 tells us Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls about like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour (NASB). Whoa. I can tell you, that lion jumped right into our paths this week. He was ready to have himself a big, big dinner … and on our good china, no less. He wanted this family more than anything.

James 4: 7 tells us Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you (NASB).

The problem is, when one hasn’t submitted completely to God, one doesn’t even recognize the devil when he walks in. He disguises himself to look like all the things our sinful hearts desire, especially those things that are not of God. He looks like the things of the world. The things society tells us are okay. It’s okay. God didn’t mean it when He said that. That was for those people all those years ago. These are modern times. It’s okay. God wants you to be happy, doesn’t He?

The answer to that is, yes. God does want his children to be happy. But not at the expense of one’s salvation or eternity with him. Worldly things are fleeting. They will not last. But the things of God are eternal. He is the source of all joy.

So how does one resist the devil?

Ephesians 6: 11-16 tells us this, Put on the full armor of God, that you may be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore, take up the full armor of God, that you may be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. Stand firm therefore, having girded your loins with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the Gospel of peace; in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming missiles of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. (NASB).

This week, we’ve prayed harder. Yes, we’ve cried. When the devil comes into one’s home, it brings about weeping. We’ve turned to God as our source of strength. We’ve put on the full armor of God, preparing for battle with those things the devil meant for destruction. We’ve followed the leading of Proverbs 3: 5-6 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight. (NASB).

GOD’S GRACE

It’s been a rough, few days. But we feel God’s grace and mercy in the midst of this trial. Had we not had this kind of faith, the faith that sees beyond the unseen, our lives could have been changed forever. As always, our hope is in Christ.

At our table tonight?

We set a special place for Jesus. He’s always welcome in our home and in our hearts.

Friends, if the devil comes knocking at your door, and he will if you are a Jesus-follower, you’re the very person he wants to bring down. Get out your Bible. Pray the scriptures. The one I quoted here from the book of Ephesians is a great place to start. Know that God is right there with you. He has hold of your hand. Isaiah 41:13 says, I am the LORD your God, who upholds your right hand. Who says to you, “Do not fear, I will help you.” (NASB).

Reach out to God. Do not let Satan win this battle. Put on that armor and call upon the name of Jesus, the name by which we must all be saved. When Satan Attacks, you will be ready with these 9 scriptures against spiritual warfare. If you need prayer, send me an email or a PM. I promise to get right back to you.

Debbie, Satan made himself known at our house a week and a half ago so I can totally relate to your post. I’ll pray for you and you pray for me. Thanks for the great scripture reminders. And Proverbs 3:5-6 have been my life verses for years.

Isaiah 41:13 says, I am the LORD your God, who upholds your right hand. Who says to you, “Do not fear, I will help you.” (NASB). This is same scripture that got me through a rough time, years ago. Just picturing him holding my hand was such a comfort and gave me strength. It is a great one for spiritual warfare.

    • Debra DuPree Williams says:

Sally Jo, I agree, such a great scripture for times such as this. I’m thankful that both of us found comfort and peace in these words. God is faithful and oh, so good!

  5. Patricia Tiffany Morris says:

    • Debra DuPree Williams says:
