An Interview About AI on FOTF – Worth Watching
This past week, my husband and I watched an interview on Focus on the Family with Jim Daly. His guest was author Abdu Murray who wrote Fake ID. To say it was enlightening is an understatement of the highest order. I will put a link to the interview at the end of this blog post.
I’m not going to go into the interview too much. Here, I will share four thoughts that stood out to me. You truly do need to watch it, especially if you are a parent or a grandparent of young children who may be (and likely are) using some kind of artificial intelligence.
AI DOESN’T CREATE – IT REGENERATES
I will admit, I’d never stopped to consider this at all. But it is true. We tend to think of AI as just a helpful tool so that we gain more time to do the things we want to do. But if you are a creative of any kind—an artist, a writer, a musician, and the list goes on, you have to know that AI has “stolen” works, perhaps including your work, and used it to train bots on how to write like you, paint like you, design like you, etc.
Just this week, a very well-known and favorite author of many of us shared that every book she has written has been used to train bots to write like her. Then, there is the story of the Disney artist allegedly creating work using AI (against Disney standards and terms) and being fired for having done so. Neither of these scenarios seems right to me (not the firing if proven to be true, but his having gone against established standards). IF IT DOESN’T ENHANCE – DON’T GIVE AI A CHANCE
Mr. Murray made a statement that makes sense to me. He has three things that any use of AI must do: Enhance human judgment, human creativity, and human connection. Those sound like reasonable criteria to me.
DON’T GIVE AN AI ENTITY A NAME
I will admit, I use one program for brainstorming with me created by someone I know. I tend to call this program by that person’s name. A friend reminded me that it isn’t really this person and to use “it”. Jim Daly said during this interview that he and his family have the now-famous device in their home that many of us have (I do not. Wouldn’t have it under any circumstances as it creeps me out). His family do not call it by its familiar name, but they refer to it as “it”. Sounds like a safe thing to do to me. We already know if we mention a product, it’s going to show up in multiple ads for days on our iPhone and other devices.
ONE TOO CREEPY TO EVEN MENTION
This last one was just too creepy for me to even mention. That said, here is the link to the episode at Focus on the Family. Do watch it. I know you will learn something, and it will definitely make you stop and think about how you use AI.

Blessings, y’all!
I love this hymn. We sang this with regularity in our church in B’ham AL. I wish I could find the anthem. Perhaps some AI bot could do that!
