Pumpkin Spice and Prayer – Building a Cozy Fall Writing Routine

I love Fall. It’s my favorite time of the year. My first child was born at the end of September, and my birthday followed his by eleven days.

The hectic pace of summer days is past, and things are evolving into a slower, calmer rhythm. It’s time to settle into all that is cozy and warm. This just came to my mind, No wonder I write cozy mysteries.

ALL THINGS PUMPKIN SPICE

These days Fall is all about Pumpkin Spice this or that. I know most of my friends go nuts over pumpkin spice, but I must avoid it since I have a major sensitivity to anything with cinnamon in it. Especially if they use artificial fragrance like that in those brooms and potpourri around this time of the year.

That sensitivity doesn’t keep me from thinking about it. I love the aroma, but my nose and my lungs tell me not to get too close. So, how do I manage to keep Fall around me when I can’t even enjoy the most popular drink of our day? I substitute allspice or nutmeg. No cinnamon, but I get to keep the feel and even come close to the taste.

CANDLES, PUMPKINS, LEAVES, AND THROWS

Then, I decorate my writing space. I pull out candles that smell like old libraries or books since these are my favorites. You could opt for the pumpkin spice ones. I did a search for a roaring fire scented candles and several different ones came up. http://bit.ly/3VJsYGH

Garlands of fall leaves in the glorious colors of fall cascading from windows or bookcases can bring the colors inside no matter where you live. And of course, pumpkins in all the various sizes and colors add the perfect touch. Cornstalks are another favorite if space allows.

How about a comfy fall throw? It doesn’t have to be in Fall colors. Just your favorite one will work no matter its color. But don’t you love all the beautiful plaids so prevalent this season? Don’t forget to check out Pinterest for more ideas. As I wrote this, I found  the link below on Pinterest. Check it out!

PRAY BEFORE PLANNING YOUR FALL ROUTINE

And don’t forget to think about your Fall blog posts. Pray about what you will write about. Does it fit your brand? Will it encourage someone? I love being told I’m an encourager. I strive to be. I know I don’t always live up to that title, but when I don’t, I can always ask for forgiveness and try to be better.

Take a quiet walk in the woods to clear your mind and your spirit before you begin your day. Look all around you for story ideas. Spending time out in God’s beautiful creation this time of year is always a boost to my spirit. The air is crisp and clean. If I’m blessed, I’ll smell someone’s fire with real wood, not just gas logs like we have. Oooh, the aroma! Just enjoy listening to Him saying to you, Be still, and know that I am God. (Psalm 46:10 ESV.)

Build your writing routine around all these things. You don’t have to do all of them. The most important thing is getting words on the page. There is only one you, and no one besides you can write the story God laid on your heart.

I’ll leave you with this verse—Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. (Colossians 3:23 ESV).

Blessings of the new season, y’all!

I used to love anything with cinnamon. My body developed a strong dislike for even being in its presence.
I must run through stores in the Fall. Forget going to IKEA!
      Love you!
