Loved That Book? Write a Review

In the past few weeks and months, I’ve seen many social media posts about the value of reviews of the books you’ve read. I know. You don’t know what to say. Read on, I’m here to help with that.

STARS – SO MANY STARS

Did you know that reviews are like gold to authors? They are one of the most coveted of all things book-related. Even a bad review is still someone’s opinion. I got a one-star review. I was just glad she didn’t say she threw it across the room. I’ve read a few reviews which included that. On a side note, my editor informed me that one isn’t a true author until one gets a one-star review. So, thank you very much to that person, wherever you may be.

We all know whether we liked the books we’ve read or whether we didn’t. We’ve read books we loved, books we hated, and even books we didn’t finish for one reason or another.

CHEERING YOU ON

Let me encourage you to write a review. Do it by hand or on your computer first. Then read it aloud. Hearing your words will give you insight that reading only with your eyes will never show you.

Go to that author’s page on Amazon, Goodreads, BookBub, B&N, or anywhere you normally would review a book, and read reviews written by others.  Did you find one that relates to how you felt about this book?

Now that you’ve read a few reviews, go try your hand. Do some self-editing. Change some words around until it sounds good to your ears.

It doesn’t have to be long at all. Simply I loved this book. Highly recommended.

Now, as you compose your review, don’t ever, ever copy the words of someone else. Remember those reviews you just read? They belong to the people who wrote them.  Don’t do that. Use different words to convey the same thought or idea if that’s your same opinion of that book.

Bottom line. Reviews are extremely valuable to authors. If you have favorite authors and you love all their books, do try to compose a review. Posting is easy. They practically give you step-by-step instructions. I always write reviews on my computer and then, copy and paste them into the site.

IN A NUTSHELL

Your review doesn’t have to be long.

Your review doesn’t have to sound like the latest literary novel.

Be sure the words you post are your thoughts and impressions about the book.

FINAL THOUGHTS, AND THANK YOU

If you’ve read my first novel, Grave Consequences and you wrote a review, yes, even that one-star one, thank you. If you’ve read it and you haven’t left a review, I’d appreciate it if you’d leave one. Your honest opinion always matters, whatever it may be.

Now, go write a review of the last book you read. You can do this.

Blessings, y’all!

I struggled a bit to find a hymn or anthem suitable for this post. This is one of my favorites. Sung at IPC in B’ham. Written by Felix Mendelssohn, the words are from Numbers 24:17. Since I spoke about stars for reviews, this seemed appropriate. The Star from Jacob shining and a scepter from Israel rising. Our Savior created all the stars and everything we see. May we all lift our joyful hearts in thanksgiving! To God be the glory.

Thanks for posting this. Authors need reviews and comments not only on their books, but also on their blog posts and social media posts. Every comment and response is appreciated.
