When The Unexpected Comes Knocking
I had something happen this week that would be laughable if it were not so surprising. It isn’t anything life-altering, at least I hope it will prove not to be. But it caught me off guard, sent me reeling, then looking for answers.
When the Unexpected Comes Knocking@DDuPreeWilliams #TrustGod #Unexpected #Writing Share on XThe first person I reached out to was my husband. I told him he wouldn’t believe what was about to happen. Then I called a friend. Aren’t we blessed to have friends who have experience in things we simply do not? Friends who can calm us down and keep us from falling head-long over the cliff? To that friend, you know who you are. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
STOP AND TAKE A DEEP BREATH
When I finally caught my breath and got my wits back, with solid answers from my friend, I knew what my next steps were. I got in touch with three more friends and asked if we could move a calendar date up a couple of weeks.
Then, I finally turned to the One I should have gone to first.
I don’t know how all this will turn out.
But God does.
PUT YOUR TRUST IN GOD
Since I trust Him with my entire life, my next breath, the lives of my husband, our children and grandchildren, my marriage, my writing life, my books, and all aspects of my life, I know I can trust Him to take care of this, too.
I just read Psalm 55. Verse 22 says, Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved (ESV). Proverbs 3:5 (ESV) says Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
What do you do when you don’t know what to do? To whom do you turn?
In the song, Someone to Care, the last line of the chorus repeats, You’re His child, and He cares for you. Since I know I’m His child, I know I can count on Him to care about every little thing in my life, just as I do my own children. That’s where I’m putting my trust—in Abba Father.

I appreciate you!
Blessings, y’all!
I would give anything if I had a recording of Charles and Marie Hinson and me singing this. I’m not bragging, just speaking truth, but we sounded so much better than this. Charles was my high school choral teacher and he and his wife and I formed a Gospel trio when I was in 11th grade. We’ve sung together every time we could after I left for college. They are some of the best people I’ve ever known and I’m so blessed to have them in my life. They are both in their 80s now. I still see them in their 20s and 30s, their ages when we met. I love this song. This was one of our standards and one of our favorites. Charles arranged it for us and it is far different, and better, than this arrangement.
This photo is at my parents’ home after my husband’s and my wedding rehearsal. From Charles’s hands and the shape of Marie’s and my mouth (lots of Ahs and Ooos in our parts) I can tell we were singing this song. Oh, how I love these godly people. Tears as I write this. Oh, and my Mama made my dress. The piano still sits in our family room. It was my Grandmother’s. 1905 Ellington upright grand.
The Conversation
Many of my friends, family, and God, have taught me to take everything to God in prayer. I’ve seen some amazing prayers answered in just the last few weeks. Many of the situations seemed hopeless, and practically overnight, God turned them around.
I pray your situation turns out perfectly for you
Thanks for sharing the reminder to go to God first. I try to do that, but I’m so thankful God puts people in my life who can listen and provide their input (and that I know they follow God). Sometimes God speaks through others. 🙂
