Remembering Sissy

Today, I’m remembering my precious sister. I always called her Sissy.  Sissy went to live with Jesus on November 16th last year.

Her given name was Bobbie Ann, for our Daddy who was Bobby when he was a boy. She was a bit like him. They both had a stubborn streak a mile wide. Didn’t make them bad people, it’s just the way they were wired. I’m here to attest to the fact that they were two of the finest people I ever knew.

I don’t know all the things there are to know about my sister. And that’s as it should be. Some things aren’t meant to be shared. But I know she was good to me. And to our parents. And to her family. To her friends. To my family.

SHE TAUGHT ME TO READ

When I was just a wee one, she taught me to read. She cared for me while Mama worked. She entertained me when I was a baby by dancing and singing until Mama got home to nurse me.

When we were older, she taught me to sing. I know you’ve heard the story of us singing together through the years. We had so much fun doing that. One of the last things we did together, the last time I saw her this side of heaven, was to sing together. I have a video of that which I’ll treasure forever.

MY GENEALOGY BUDDY

Sis was much more than a big sister. She was friend, confidante, and genealogy-cemetery-hopping partner. She was the one who encouraged my writing, who sent me the link that took me to BRMCWC the first time. Mostly, she was a good and sound spiritual advisor, and my biggest cheerleader. Thanks, Sis!

I know she prayed for me and for my family. I’m sure she’s interceding on our behalf even as I write this. If such is possible.

She was all these things and so much more. Anyone who knew her was left better because of having her in their lives.

HOW I MISS HER!

I miss her. We talked many times every single day, especially in the last few years of her life. In the last days, she couldn’t remember how to use her phone, so our conversations came to a close. But our hearts will always be joined. She will hold a special place in my heart forever.

And one day . .  . I’ll see her again.

Remembering you today, Sissy. You were the best sister ever, and I am so blessed that God gave you to me. I’ll see you soon!

Love,

D

Be sure to tell the important people in your life that you love them. Tell them often. Call them. Visit them. Don’t live with regrets . . . ever!

Sissy’s favorite Bible verse in her later years: 1 Corinthians 12:9 – My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. (ESV)

Blessings, y’all!

Sissy would be thrilled that I’m putting this song and Larry Ford singing it on here. This is the last thing we sang together on this day, just before the photo of us was taken. Larry is the son-in-law of Mama Lessie who prayed so fervently for Sissy when she was battling breast cancer. Mama Lessie also anointed her more than once, too. Sissy, I remember. And yes, I’m crying.
