The Word, One Event at a Time

This Friday will mark the beginning of the seventh week of sheltering-in-place for us. I guess I can’t lay claim to that in actuality, though it certainly seems like it.

At the beginning of this, before the order was in place, I’d already been in for a couple of weeks just waiting to see the turn of events. We did venture out into our small neighborhood park, accessible to only those who live behind our guarded gates. A good thing. My husband was trying his hand at headshots since I need new ones and I had to cancel an appointment with a professional. We spent about forty-five minutes there. No one else was around. And last week, I had to go to the dermatologist. That was probably the safest doctor appointment I’ve ever had. I won’t go into details, but it was in and out in a flash with all manner of precaution in between.

So, other than that, we’ve been here. I thought I’d share some of how we are spending our time.  Maybe you’ve never done this, either, and you’d like to jump in and do this too.

Hubby and I, my sister, and two of our cousins have begun reading through and studying the Bible chronologically. None of us had ever done that. I won’t tell you how old we are, but just suffice it to say that we’re all in the at-risk population they talk about as it relates to the first paragraph above.

If you’ve never read through the Bible chronologically, this is the perfect time to begin that. What do you have but time? I’ve seen some of y’all’s posts. I know about all the cakes and pies and cupcakes, etc. you’ve been in the kitchen baking. How about feeding your soul along with your body?

We were urged to do this by my sister’s son and his wife. We’re using an app called YouVersion. It offers several plans and every translation you could want. We’re using ESV and the chronological plan. We are following up with another app called The Bible Recap hosted by Tara-Leigh Cobble, available on Spotify and YouTube. She explains what we’ve read that day, usually only three or four chapters. The entire thing takes about twenty minutes of our time.  This is Tara-Leigh’s twelfth time through the Bible if I calculated correctly. The audio was made a couple of years ago, but the discussions are the same.

Each of us decided we want more. I can tell you, once you begin to delve into God’s Word, He’s going to work in you and you will become like us, thirsting for more. We’re all thankful to have been brought to this point, whatever the past held, and for whatever reason God had in His plans for it being at this time for all of us. We trust that God knew the plans He had/has for us. There’s good old Jeremiah 29:11 again. It shows up all the time in my posts.

Don’t think  you have to begin this on January 1. God’s Word is going to be there and it will be the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Forever, in fact. Any time is a good time. We’re still in Genesis. We’ve finished Job, which comes in the early chapters of Genesis, and now we’ve jumped back to Genesis. I love that we’re doing this together and we have one another to discuss things with.

If you feel alone in doing this, find a friend or two, a cousin like we have, or your spouse like I did. We’ve enjoyed bringing questions and discussion to one another. We’re all growing in our faith and in our knowledge of Him and His character. We feel so blessed to be reading together for such a time as this. If you decide to do this and don’t have anyone, contact me. We’re not that far into this and it’s already changing our lives.

How about you? Have you read through the Bible in this manner? Share your experience with us.
