Just Ten More Years

My husband and I had our first visit with a new general practitioner today. She’s delightful, cute as a bug, and very thorough. Maybe a bit too thorough. During our exams, she happened to be talking about something I can’t remember and the words, “for people whose life expectancy is ten years.”

WHAT???

Hubby and I talked about this on the way home and at dinner tonight with our son who is with us for a bit longer. Hubs said she probably didn’t mean us in particular, but people of our age group.

Man! I hope so. Now, neither of us is a spring chicken (73 and 75) and true, I have some health issues, not serious ones, just some that need to be addressed. We’re working on that. She’s even okay with me having a functional medicine doctor in addition to her.

WHAT HAVE I NOT DONE THAT I NEED TO DO?

But thinking about having only ten more years left on this earth . . . what do I need to prioritize? What do I hope to accomplish? What haven’t I done that I’d love to do, or what hasn’t happened that maybe a word from me, gently placed, would make a difference in someone’s eternity?

Those are heavy thoughts.

I can honestly say, I have no clue as to how to answer these questions. Well, most of them. Some I know full-well what I need to do.

Right now, I’m going to spend some time in prayer and in thought to answer these. Whether I have ten years or twenty, God knows. My very wise husband reminded me of this today as we talked. No need to worry. God has had my life in His hands since before I was formed in my mother’s womb. Before I formed you in the womb I knew you (Jeremiah 1:5a ESV). What a comforting thought.

HE HOLDS ALL OUR TOMORROWS

So, as the old song (from the 80s—does that make it old?) said, Don’t Worry, Be Happy. I ran to my Bible to read these words, penned by Paul—. . . for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content (Philippians 4:11b ESV).

I have watched my husband live this out. He worries about nothing. He knows Who holds all his tomorrows. As many times as I’ve sung that old gospel song, one would think I would have learned this long ago. Can you say slow learner? I’m far better than in the past, and I do know Who holds every second of my life. Again, I turned to Paul—For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself. For whether we live, we live unto the Lord; and whether we die, we die unto the Lord: whether we live therefore, or die, we are the Lord’s (Romans 14:7-8 ESV).

The Bible is full of promises like this for those of us who are followers of Christ. If you don’t know where you will be for eternity, and there are only two choices, go to your Bible and read the Gospel of John. Then read Romans. From there, read your entire Bible. If you’d like to know how to do this in a year, contact me and I’ll share our reading plan with you. God’s gift of eternal life through Jesus, His only Son, will be the best gift you can possibly receive this Christmas.

Blessings, y’all!

Lovely presentation of this old hymn. Another of those I’ve sung more times than I can count. Do you know Who holds your tomorrows? You need to be sure!

Thank you for your thoughts, Debbie. Every day, I ask God to help me serve Him in the way He wants. I don’t know what my legacy will be, but the only thing I want is to do what God wants. Prayers as you seek to do God’s will.

Wow! I’m not far behind ya’ll. This is definitely a wake up call for me too. I’ve recently been feeling the call to get busy reaching goals and God’s plan for my life. Your post reminds me, I better get going.

Great post, Debbie. Yes, sobering for all of us who are in our later years. Prioritizing is a must. Thanks for the encouragement.
