Baptist Pumpkins?

Making a 2,300-mile round trip to visit a son has its pluses and its minuses. Topping the list, of course, is getting to spend a few days with our youngest son who has chosen to live in the great (as in BIG) state of Texas. Y’all it’s a long drive from the mountains of western NC to the booming metropolis of Austin.

The top negative would have to be just how far it is from here to there. For two old folks, driving that far isn’t a walk in the park, and especially, not a flight on an airplane. Take my advice, unless you want to stop every day and enjoy the sights along the way while trekking through some of America’s quaint little hamlets, don’t drive. Fly!

BEHOLD THE SIGHTS

Some sights along the way were very interesting. Now, we spent about forty years in the flat lands of Florida. But I am not kidding when I tell you the flat lands in Mississippi and Louisiana are far flatter than those in Florida. It’s so flat, so sparsely treed, one can see for miles in all directions.

To remember the things we see, I take lots of photos. Since many are taken from the passenger seat of our car as it zooms down the freeway (unless you are in Atlanta, Baton Rouge, or Austin), the quality isn’t always the best. I’m taking those iPhone Photo Academy classes on FB from Emil Pakarklis. He’s good. I’m not. But I’m working at it.

WHAT KIND OF PUMPKIN IS THAT? DID THAT SIGN SAY “BAPTIST”?

Somewhere in the heart of Louisiana is a road sign that reads: Baptist Pumpkin Center. Honestly, it truly does. See the photo on the accompanying graphic? I took that.

Now, Hubby and I had to ask myriad questions about said sign.

How do they know their pumpkins are Baptist? Hmm. This led to more questions and comments such as are they now seedless (sinless) where they were once seedy (sinful)? What about the Methodist, Presbyterian, or Catholic pumpkins? I have relatives in Louisiana who are Catholic. Do they have their own pumpkin center? And what about all those Pentecostals of Louisiana (watch the best worship arrangement of Waymaker at the end of this post.)

So, off to Google I went, albeit on the LTE which I will never understand in a million years.

AHA! LIGHTBULB MOMENT

Apparently, Baptist and Pumpkin Center are two separate little towns in Louisiana. They don’t boast Baptist pumpkins at all. Aww, corn shucks. (Make that sugar, as there are more fields of sugar cane here than anything else we saw. Besides, Granny always said, If you can’t say something sweet, don’t say anything at all. Did y’all have the same Granny?)

This was just one of a few road signs that made my heart sing on our long journey. I’ll share more with you in the coming weeks. Maybe I’ll just put it in my newsletter. Watch for that and an opportunity to win a $25 Amazon gift card. Just by signing up. Easy peasy. Get your name in the pot. This is for new subscribers, with my thanks to those of you who’ve been here since the beginning of my writing journey.

In the meantime, do remember all who grow pumpkins and sugar cane, and all those who will be celebrating the season of harvest. We will be celebrating another Thanksgiving soon. Let’s remember those who work so hard to put the food on our tables. And those who take it to market. We have it so easy, and we often don’t appreciate it.

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem.

Blessings, y’all!

We listen to and watch this all the time. Love the lead singer!  These people know how to praise God in song! Oh, be sure to look for the RBG look-alike! Seriously, she looks exactly like the late Supreme Court Judge!

We have a Pumpkin Center community just down the road from us. The schools are all like—Pumpkin Center Primary, Middle, and High School. Our church has started a United For Christ in this school and several others around town and are having a great turnout each week as they share the gospel and give out Bibles. The students are all very hungry for God’s word. And, our church is Baptist;)
