3 Steps to Eternity

My husband and I have made all manner of plans lately. They come in the form of plans for our upcoming 50th-anniversary vow renewal; plans to visit our eldest son and his family in northern Virginia; plans to visit our son in Austin; plans to help our son in Tampa move up to our area; plans to help our son in Raleigh move closer to Charlotte; plans to attend a multi-class reunion of my old high school.

While stressing over all these earthly things, I stopped to ask myself if I’ve prepared for my next life.

You know the one.

Eternity.

While being married to the same person for 50 years is a huge accomplishment and blessing, eternity will last, well . . . forever. Have we, have you prepared for that? Here are three steps brought to my mind. I’m certain there are more, but these are pretty basic and they cover most of the important things.

STEP 1

The first step is to acknowledge God as Sovereign. Read John 3:16. Then give your heart and soul to God. It isn’t just praying a prayer and thinking you’re now saved. It doesn’t work that way. Sure, you do pray to invite God to become the Lord of your life, but it isn’t just you saying the words. Anyone can do that. Even the smallest child can repeat words said to them.

No.

You must know and believe, without a doubt, that Jesus Christ was born to save you. He was born of a virgin, was crucified for our sins, was buried, but He was raised from the dead and He now sits at the right hand of God our Father Almighty. And He will come again!

Faith.

That’s what this takes. Faith that God and Jesus and Holy Spirit are exactly who they say they are. Who the Bible tells us over and over.

Hebrews 11:1 KJV says, Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Put your faith in God that you will be with Him for all eternity.

This is the kind of faith we must have. That faith that lives deep within your heart, your very soul. Faith that leaves no room for doubt, and no room for anything but the saving grace of Jesus Christ. Faith so deep that you will stand up to anyone and anything that denies Jesus. It is so much more than a simple prayer.

STEP 2

Next, you need to stay in God’s Word daily. Reading God’s Word is how we come to know Him intimately. How we learn of His character. What He is and what He isn’t. Honestly, I know of no other way to have the kind of relationship one needs for life eternal than to study God’s Word daily. Everything we need to live our lives on this earth is contained within the words of the Bible.

Everything.

STEP 3

Next, find your people. God calls us to worship collectively, as a group. Here are some verses to back that up. Matthew 18:20, Hebrews 10:25, Colossians 3:16, Psalm 34:3, John 4:23.  I’m sure you know even more than these. I found one site that listed 100 verses about Christians coming together to worship and praise God.

Find a good church and if you’ve never been baptized, now is the perfect time to do that. No, it isn’t necessary for entry into the Kingdom. It is an outward sign to those around you that you have decided to follow Jesus. That you’ve turned from your old sinful self, and you are now cleansed with His precious blood. You are a new creature in Christ.

As my husband and I continue to prepare for our 50th anniversary, we said to one another only yesterday, that as joyful as this is, our hearts and our minds are now fixed on things eternal rather than on earthly things.

Take a deep breath and picture where you will be spending eternity. What comes to mind? My friends, if you didn’t see yourself prostrate before the Throne of God with your Savior Jesus Christ sitting at His right hand, praising God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, and singing Holy, Holy, Holy, then do read the verses above

Seek ye the LORD while He may be found (Isaiah 55:6-7 KJV).

I’ll speak to that verse another time but in the meantime, pray and invite God into your life, then, get into His Word and into a good, Bible-teaching church. If you need help, reach out to me. Leave a comment on this blog. I answer each one (sometimes it’s in an email). Know that I am praying for you and your family. I’d love to spend eternity with you.

Blessings, y’all!

I’ve never heard this song but it fits this message perfectly. I pray it blesses you.
