3 Lessons From a Walk in God’s Creation

The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork  (Psalm 19:1 ESV).

My husband and I have traveled a lot lately. We love spending time with our family. One of the joys of traveling is taking those back woods roads that most people don’t take these days. We avoid the freeways as much as possible. There is no way we will plan a trip that includes driving through Atlanta.

Those roads less traveled offer us a glimpse of God’s handiwork not truly seen and appreciated from the freeways twisting and turning, running over and under one another. Roads off the beaten path take us to places that mainly the locals get to see and enjoy. We feel so blessed to have seen so many different places and the changing seasons this year.

GOD’S CREATION SPEAKS TO US IF WE SLOW DOWN TO SEE AND LISTEN

The Scripture at the top of this post was written by David. Just as a reminder, this Psalm ends on verse 14, with the familiar words we often prayed as children and teens. Go read that now and you will remember.

Just as David saw God’s glory in the heavens, we can see his fingerprints in the turning leaves, the crisp air, and even in the changing light. Do you do prayer walks? If you don’t know what this is, I’d like to suggest Janet Holm McHenry’s book, Prayer Walk. I know you will love it and be blessed by it.  https://www.amazon.com/PrayerWalk-Becoming-Prayer-Strength-Discipline-ebook/dp/B002ZW7EG4/ref

I love to talk to God when I’m out in nature and sense His presence all around me. Hearing the songs of the birds and the rustle of the leaves in the wind thrills my soul. This is a good time to speak with Him about those things we hold in our hearts. Let Him touch the creative parts of you, no matter your calling, be it writer, artist, teacher, doctor, mom, or student. Wherever you are at this point in your life. Let God speak to you.

EVERY SEASON HOLDS A STORY

Autumn reveals a cycle of letting go and preparing for renewal. I wrote about this in an earlier blog post this month. As the colors of the leaves change from shades of green to their Fall colors, let go, and fall to the ground, it reminds us that endings bring with them the promise of  new beginnings. As writers, or artists, anyone creative, we can find fodder for our work in the changing seasons. Get out and take that walk.

On a side note, a few years ago, I wrote a blog post about the fall colors of the leaves being there all along. The presence of chlorophyll masks the Fall colors. Once the sun moves and becomes less bright, those Fall colors are revealed. Here is a link to that blogpost: https://debradupreewilliams.com/debra-dupree-williams/your-true-colors-are-they-masked/

Do you have a story or an idea for artwork? Maybe it’s time to reveal that to the world.

PART OF GOD’S ONGOING STORY

Did you ever stop to think that you are a part of God’s ongoing story? You are. No matter what He has called you to do. The same God who paints the glorious skies and created the trees with their changing colors, also writes the details of our lives. When we are out in nature, it seems our minds and spirits calm. We can see and feel a sense of purpose. God reminds us that we are His children and are part of His grand narrative.

Have you been blessed to take a drive or a walk through the ever-changing landscape where you live? I pray you have. I know you met Him there. Let your heart and mind soar to the heights of heaven and give Him glory and praise.

Blessings, y’all!

I love this hymn! Why don’t you sing this while on that walk in God’s creation?
