Well, Shut My Mouth – Scriptures When I Need to Hear and Not Speak

I have a friend in the writing world who posted about a friend of hers, a well-known person in the Christian writing world. His paraphrased advice to her was God gave you one mouth and two ears for a reason. Sometimes you need to shut your mouth and open your ears. I think the word he used was hush.

Opening one’s heart and mind goes along with the advice to open one’s ears. But we must be careful to open our ears to God’s truth and not to what the world has to say.

WARNINGS FROM JAMES AND SOLOMON

James, half-brother of Jesus tells us in the book attributed to him that we stumble in many ways, and not controlling our tongue is one of those. (Read James 3:2-5). I’ll be the first to admit that this is one of my stumbling blocks. I’m way too quick to blurt out something without first engaging my brain. Or my heart. Just ask my husband.

In the book of Proverbs, written by King Solomon, called the wisest man who ever lived, has a few words to say about remaining silent. Even a fool who keeps silent is considered wise; when he closes his lips, he is deemed intelligent (Proverbs 17:28 ESV). There’s so much I could say about these words in such a time as this, but I will refrain and let you supply your own thoughts.

Those two places in Scripture are admonitions or warnings to take heed when it comes to the words we utter. Sometimes we need to keep quiet.

5 ENCOURAGING SCRIPTURES (about hearing)

Here are five Scriptures to encourage you when you struggle, like me, with listening rather than engaging my mouth. These are good reminders about who and Whose we are.

John 10:27-28 ESV, My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.

Revelation 3:20 ESV, Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.

Matthew 7:24 ESV, Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.

Mark 4:9 ESV, And he said, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

Romans 10:17 ESV, So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

I hope these familiar pieces of Scripture will stay with you this week. I know I needed them. They remind me to remain daily in God’s Word. It’s so easy to slip into worldly thought when we’re bombarded by social media at every turn. I’m keeping these close by as reminders of who and Whose I am. I admit, sometimes, I forget, and I’m thankful for these words that bring me back to where I belong.
