From Generation to Generation

Our Great-Nephew Brit and His Beautiful wife, Kelly

I did something for the first time ever this past Friday. Actually, my husband and I did this together. We attended a baby reveal party. Now, when we were having our kids, there was no such thing as a baby reveal party. If you wanted to know the sex of your unborn child, they would tell you during a routine ultrasound, but only if you wanted to know. And no one had heard of a baby-reveal party.

We didn’t want to know. We decided that we wanted to be surprised because we knew we were going to be thrilled no matter the baby’s gender. So, three times we waited. Three times we were blessed with little boys. Precious little boys.

We’re What?
When I became pregnant, at age forty, with our fourth child I just knew that God didn’t give a fourth son to a woman my age when she already had three beautiful sons. I wanted to be surprised.

Well, that baby arrived very early after a difficult pregnancy and a months-long confinement to bed. We were so worried, we cared not what the gender was, we just wanted our precious baby to be healthy, especially appearing eight weeks prematurely.

Jim and Debbie with Four Sons, Ken, Chris, Adam, Daniel
My husband had just left the hospital with our three boys when things began happening very quickly. Remember, we didn’t have cell phones in 1990. I had to track down my husband and tell him he was going to miss the big event if he didn’t hurry. By the grace of God alone, I somehow managed to locate him and he arrived just in time for the birth of our fourth child. You guessed it. Son number four, Daniel. We now had our complete family.

While I waited for my husband to get back, our niece, Shelly, four months pregnant at the time, was there to hold my hand as I labored through the first few contractions. Remember, things were going fast. I’ll always be grateful to Shelly for being there for me. Little did she know that she would one day become a certified midwife and an RN working in labor and delivery.

And the baby at my first-ever baby reveal? Shelly’s and her husband Gray’s firstborn’s, firstborn─their fourth grandchild. I’m thrilled that I got to be there to see those blue balloons rise out of the box. It was a special time. Shelly and Gray now have two granddaughters, one grandson, and a second grandson on the way. And I’m sure, that as the parents of seven children, they will be blessed with many more grands.

Is There a Genealogist in the Group?
The genealogist in me couldn’t help but wonder which of the next generation will carry forth the family histories. Odds are that at least one of them will pick up that mantle. With a family this big and with such a notable history, the stories are too grand to not be passed down.

Yes, I was excited and thrilled for my sister’s eldest grandson and his beautiful wife, in sharing with family and friends, that there is to be another baby boy, joining his young cousin, to carry on the family name.

Generation to Generation
As I looked around at all the godly young people gathered there, I had no doubt that the newest, next generation will be just fine, as will the generations that follow them. After all, they are next in a long line of family and friends who love and serve the Lord. May God pour out His blessings upon them and all future generations, as He has in generations past.
