The Helper

By Debra DuPree Williams @DDuPreeWilliams

As a part of our daily devotion or quiet time with God, my husband and I have downloaded several devotional plans through the YouVersion Bible app. I’ll put a link at the bottom of this so that you may search for those that speak to your needs.

As I’ve grown in my faith, I’ve come to want to know Holy Spirit more and more. When I first became aware of Him, I was confused. I didn’t fully understand that He, like Jesus, is a person. I’d heard all my life that He is the third person of the Trinity, but what exactly did that mean? If He’s a Spirit, how can He be a person, too?

PERSONALITY = PERSON

In this one devotion, we’re told that what separates a person from a thing is that persons have personality. That is, they think, feel, and have desires. Inanimate objects have none of those things. Holy Spirit has all those things. Romans 8:27 says this—And He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

Back up one verse to Romans 8:26 And in the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. I’ve clung to this verse many times in my life—the death of my parents, of my husband’s parents. My sister’s diagnosis of breast cancer, Stage 4. And a recent family issue that literally brought us to our knees.

INTERCESSOR

In each of those situations, my heart, my very soul was so overwhelmed with grief, I had no words. All I could do was weep. Mind you, not your normal weeping. Any of you who’ve experienced the death of anyone or the loss of something valuable, perhaps a relationship, can relate. This grief goes beyond our physical pain to pain so deep we can’t touch it, we can’t put words to it, but Holy Spirit is there, and He hears, He knows. He goes before the Father and intercedes on our behalf. Those wordless moanings make their way to the Throne Room.

Holy Spirit isn’t just some power we call upon. He is a person, The Helper.  That, my friends, is someone I want to know. Personally. Deeply.

As we continue to read through our Bibles, we come to know more of the character of God, the Triune God, day by day. Holy Spirit has been present with God since before the foundations of the world were laid. He is still here. With us. Beside us. Within us. The LORD is There—Yahweh Shammah.

Here is the link to the plan we are both reading along with our daily Bible reading. If you’ve ever wanted to know more about Holy Spirit, this will help you to understand Him so much better. As you come to know Him, ask God to grant to you, baptism in the Holy Spirit just as He gave to His disciples on the day of Pentecost. Go to Plans and go to The God I Never Knew.

Here are some links to a couple of books I love that are about either Holy Spirit or the Names of God.

The Helper is available only on audio, but it is a great book. I read it back in the early 1980s. You can get an old one, but it will cost you a fortune.

Until next week, Blessings, y’all!
