A Virtual Trip to The Holy Land

As you’ve heard me mention a few times in recent months, my husband and I are reading the Bible Chronologically. This is the first time either of us has done this. Today, we reached day 133. We’re in II Samuel and Chronicles and sometimes we jump over to Psalms. That’s because right now, the story centers around King David. Do you remember? The one who killed Goliath with a small stone and a slingshot.

It’s interesting to see how the two books differ. Both carry the story of David, but Chronicles leaves out the most personal things about David.

I’m no Bible scholar, not by a long shot. But seeing all these events in the order in which they occurred is eye-opening. It truly makes the Bible make more sense than ever. Every day, we look forward to that day’s reading and what we will learn from it.

This past week as we read, I saw a post about a friend’s book about the Holy Land. Oddly enough, I had recommended this book to quite a few family members as they prepared to visit that part of the world. I knew it would give them a glimpse of things that they may not be able to see otherwise. But I had never purchased a copy for J and me.

The book is Reflections of God’s Holy Land, A Personal Journey Through Israel by Eva Marie Everson and Miriam Feinberg Vamosh. Eva Marie was chosen as one of a group of Christian journalists to tell the world about Israel and that it was, indeed, safe to travel there. Miriam was their guide and interpreter. Eva Marie is a Bible scholar, and Miriam is fiercely familiar with her country.

This week, our copy arrived at our front door. As I’ve thumbed through the pages, just a cursory glance as we want to use it as a companion to our daily readings, I’m amazed by the beautiful photography, much of it by Eva Marie or Miriam. And, of course, Eva Marie’s words paint a beautiful picture in and of themselves, filling in the story with Biblical truths.

The book is laid out with the city/village/place-of-interest and a photograph, followed by the question Did You Know, and that followed by Reflections. It is a hardback book of about 255 pages. I cannot wait to get into it as we read our scriptures. I’m sure that by the time we finish our first chronological-read-through, it will be well-worn, and the pages turned back and forth many, many times.

Once again, I urge you to get out your Bible and put the app You Version on your phone or iPad. The man who reads to us is very good. Yes, we actually listen to the day’s scriptures. I’m an audio/visual learner, so this is so helpful to me. Then put YouTube on your television, then get the app, The Bible Recap hosted by Tara Leigh Cobble. I know you will be blessed. Add to those two things, this lovely book which will take you visually, and through Eva Marie’s beautiful word pictures, to the very places you’ve just studied in the scriptures.

If you decide to do this, come back and let me know what you thought. I have a feeling I already know, but I’d like to hear it from you.

Blessings as you journey your way through your Bible in a new and eye-opening manner.

Sally Jo, it has been one of the best things we have ever done. It makes things make more sense than ever. I love how the OT points to Christ in the NT. Amazing to see it unfold in order. Loving every minute.
